Mythical Water Creatures

Dozens of science fiction movies have depicted the octopus as being an aggressive, fearsome creature; after reading these octopus facts, you will have a clearer picture of their true life.

Octopus are mollusks; belonging to the sub-family of cephalopods, which means head to foot. An apt description, since the octopi feet are attached directly to their head. They are related to abalone, scallops, clams, oysters and snails. The rather bulbous end of the octopus contains both the head and the mantle of the creature. The head is where the donut shaped brain, the eyes and the beak like mouth are found. While they do not have a single bone in their entire structure (one of the most interesting octopus facts) there is a skull of sorts that sits above the brain. The mantle is a cylinder shaped sac that moves when the octopus breathes. This is where the three hearts, the stomach, kidney and other organs are located.

Attached to the head around the mouth area are eight arms, each lined with rows of suckers on the outside of the arm and with nerves within the arm. This structure enables the arms to be able to grab hold of items and “taste” them at the same time. When capturing prey, it is restrained by the suckers on the arms and drawn in close using all arms when, octopus facts show, it will then bite the victim; injecting it with saliva that serves to paralyze it. The sharp beak is used to tear the prey into bite sized pieces to enable the octopus to swallow them. Crabs, mollusks, and crayfish are common prey.

The octopus has amazing abilities to thwart attacks from its predators, which are primarily sharks, eels and dolphins. The capability of becoming virtually invisible through a network of pigmentation throughout its skin surface enable the octopus, facts show, to match the color, pattern and even texture of its surroundings almost instantaneously. If this transformation fails to conceal it, the octopus will release black ink into the water that simultaneously blinds and dulls the sense of smell of its pursuer. Through jet propulsion, the octopus can quickly swim away; and is able to squeeze into seemingly impossible small crevices with its boneless, flexible body.

One of the little known octopus facts is that the creature gathers shells of crustaceans, rocks and other items to build a “fortress” of sorts around their nest.

The octopus is a fascinating creature. Since it spends most of its time on the ocean floors, the octopus “facts” are actually more mythical; exaggerated to provide content for the movies. In truth, they are quiet creatures; feeding, dodging predators and laying eggs before they die; leaving a legacy of mystery for the next generation.
