Mention of basketball and great players like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal come immediately to mind. But few remember the man that started it all – Dr. James Naismith of Canada.

Naismith was born in Almonte, Ontario, in 1861 and was educated at the University McGill in Montreal where he later served as athletic director. In 1890 he moved to the United States and has taught physical education at Springfield College (then called the Young Men's Christian Association Training School) in Springfield, Massachusetts.

During his stay there, he tried to find different ways to keep students busy and noisy in shape during the harsh winter in New England. What he wanted was a good game that could be played indoors and give the boys a great drive as well. Dr. Luther Gulick, director of physical education at the School of Christian Workers, was given 14 days to Naismith create such a game.

After testing several ideas, Naismith recalled a game he played as a child called "Duck on a rock." The purpose of this medieval game was throwing pebbles at a duck is placed over a large rock which was guarded by a single person. It became the basis of "Basket Ball "(originally written in two words) that Naismith invented in 1891.

"In his attempt to think a new game, Naismith was guided by three main considerations. First, he analyzed the most popular games of the time (rugby, lacrosse, soccer, football, hockey and baseball); Naismith noted the dangers of a fastball small and concluded that the football was the safest big soft. Secondly, he saw that the more contact Physical occurred while running with the ball, dribbling or hitting it so he decided that the passage was the only legal option, according to the editors of the Wikipedia encyclopedia.

Naismith wanted to get out of the game is a contact sport so it has raised the target over heads of players and eliminating the need for a guardian. He also required of players to lob the ball – a bit like the game of duck – to score points. Finally, he settled on the 13 basic rules for playing the game

The first basketball game was played in December 1891 and was different the sport we know today. Each team had nine members, a soccer ball was used and creels set at ten feet high railings served the objectives,

The baskets have retained their lower parts where the ball had to be removed every time a successful shot has been made. Later, holes were drilled in the baskets so that the ball can be recovered with a long cylindrical rod. Players do not dribble the ball at that time they have raced with him and threw him on the head of spreading it to other players.

In 1893, Naismith replaced the peach baskets with hoops of metal that had hammock-style baskets. But ten years passed before the threads open-ended which allowed the ball to pass were used.

Today, basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world and players basketball are among the most popular and highest paid athletes in America. The sport has millions of followers and is enjoyed by people of all backgrounds life. Thank you to Naismith, basketball is here to stay.
