What makes a good Science Fiction / Fantasy book?

I want a book to read at the library …. I much science fiction and fantasy books space battles dragons and lord of the rings stuff …. are also the HALO (game) good books? I'm also a fan of Warhammer 40k, but there are so many books about 40k I do not know where to start (I like Space Marines) I'm not really into the whole of Star Trek / Star Wars books, but I love movies / shows …. yeah Anyway cool books out there you can recommend? I am open to all books really …. as they are really good and not boring.

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. You will not regret it. One of my favorite books.
