French President Georges Pompidou dreamed of a vast cultural center – a museum and an art school comprising plastic arts and music movies, books and audiovisual research. In 1969 architects from 49 countries participated in an architectural competition. 680 projects were presented. The competition was won by Italian architect Renzo Piano and the British architect couple Richard Rogers and Sue Rogers. Works to build the center has taken 5 years and ended in 1977.
